The hashtag, which is widely used today, was born on Twitter exactly 10 years ago, on August 23, 2007.
Over the past 10 years, the hashtag has become one of the most well-known and most used symbols of the digital age, from 'tagging' or categorizing Tweets. Not only has the hashtag become part of our daily conversation over time, it has changed the nature of online communication and has become a powerful tool for bringing together conversations and trends globally.
Ten years ago today, Chris Messina used the hashtag on Twitter for the first time with a #barcamp tweet. Currently, an average of 125 million hashtags are used in tweets per day. The most tweeted television show of all time was "The Walking Dead", while the most-reviewed film and hashtag of all time was "Star Wars".
